Apply now Our vision is for people with a learning disability to have access to sport and physical activity at all levels, from grassroots participation to elite level sport including at the Paralympics. Did you know that only 14% of adults with a learning disability participate in the recommended amount of physical activity every week in comparison to 41% of the general population? Did you know for the Paralympics in 2016 athletes with a learning disability only made up 3% of Team GB? What will you do? The National Sports Manager will be responsible for driving forward Mencap's vision for people with a learning disability to be recognised, supported and included as athletes at all levels, from grassroots participation through to elite level competitions. You will have a key role in establishing and championing the correct pathways, and increasing the understanding of learning disability within sport. You will play a central role in supporting athletes compete in competitions, embedding learning disability sport within the relevant sports bodies and tackling discrimination through sport. Central to the role is working within the sports sector to increase inclusion and participation for people with a learning disability. Across all work you will look to gather case studies and work collaboratively with our Communications, Policy and Research and Impact teams to increase visibility in the media of talented of athletes with learning disabilities. Core to this is being the key link between Mencap and the Sport and Disability Sport Sectors. The successful candidate will be required to work closely with organisations such as Special Olympics GB, the English Federation of Disability Sport and INAS. We are looking for someone who is as passionate as we are to ensure that people with a learning disability are being given access to sports participation, pathways and competition at all levels. We are passionate that it is time for learning disability sport to have this watershed moment. You will have the opportunity to drive through this change within the sports sector, impacting on wider societal change, doing this in partnership with athletes and sports bodies. You will need to have a background in the sport sector as well as an understanding around learning disability. You will also need to be confident and comfortable to liaise with internal and external stakeholders to positively challenge and bring about change. You need to be able to manage budgets and sports events, as well as having previous experience of project management and sports development.
